Yes, I'm so glad we overcame our fear and started my son on Depakote. Already we are seeing good things. I appreciate your support and insights, HB. They mean a lot to me as I am not bipolar and don't know what my son feels and I take on a lot of criticism on my site for using medication. It's nice to have someone who is kind and intelligent and knows what my son is going through and can offer sound advice.

One of the confusing things with knowing if a medication is really working is the fact that moods sometimes come and go on their own, and then there is also the placebo effect...
I also think improvements can be made with therapy (in particular, cognitive behavioral therapy) and with environmental changes (reduction in stress, changes in diet), but in my experience, the medication plays a key part...
