A Doctor who has Bipolar Disorder

It always helps me to read about someone else who's had some of the same experiences as myself, and with that, I thought I'd link to an article about a doctor who has bipolar disorder: Normal is a Place I Visit

So there's some weekend reading, a day or two early.  Enjoy! :)

Self Love

Self love - do you find it hard?

Every once in awhile, I'll read something that really stays with me.  Recently, it was this thought:

"Relying on the positive assessments of others, while it feels good, is temporary. We all need something more reliable and always at hand. When a negative assessment comes along you can ride your unpredictable waves of feeling if you have an anchor of self respect." - Jaktraks article on "What counseling clients ask me"

I've been thinking about how important it is to do what is right. And trying to always do right.  This helps build self respect.

For weekend reading, I'd suggest Jaktraks' Squidoo lenses:
It matters how you think
What counseling clients ask me
Small and easy steps create change

Have a happy weekend!

Bad Judgement during the Mania part of Bipolar Disorder

The bad side of mania or hypomania is poor judgement and impulse control problems.

It is hard to write about these problems, because personal stories are often embarrassing.  It's hard to talk about the stuff you did when you weren't thinking right.

This is why for weekend reading I am suggesting that you read Darcie French's Dear Squidoo letter about the errors she made during a manic episode.

She describes her excessive happiness and hopefulness, her poor judgment, and her grandiose thoughts - all symptoms of mania.  What makes her story interesting is her insight into how she was thinking.  I really enjoyed reading her story and I hope that you do too!

So that's my weekend reading suggestion..... Have a happy weekend! :)

Scattered and Tearful lately.

I haven't written much lately as my mood has been more unstable.  I've been feeling scattered and have been crying easily. I don't know if it is hypomania, or a mixed episode.... More on that soon, I hope!

Today I found Crazy Mermaid's blog and I have read most of her posts and enjoyed it immensely.  Although I don't have a lot in common - I've never had a psychotic episode - it is still helpful to read about her feelings and experiences.  The experience of having a mental illness is an experience shared across the entire spectrum of bipolar disorder, despite differences in symptoms and their severity.  It helps me to read about what other people are experiencing.

When you have some time to read, be sure to check out all of Crazy Mermaid's blog posts. It is like reading an engrossing book.  She writes about her involuntary stay in a psychiatric hospital, about the voices in her head, and her ongoing recovery.

Crystal on Bipolar Disorder

Occasionally, I come across blogs, websites, or books that stand out.  I think I'll call posts like this 'weekend reading.'

Today, it's Crystal's experience with Bipolar disorder.

She also authored Bipolar Disorder through music.

Her open letter to humanity brought tears to my eyes.

She made all of these websites on Squidoo, which is an easy site to make websites on.  You can get started here.  If you make a Squidoo page about your experience with mental illness or some other important aspect of life, please leave a comment.  I'd love to read it!
